"I wish you'd just let me have this necklace. I'm sure I can get some money selling it online."
To his surprise, Athena nodded. "Fine, take it. I can tell you right now it won't do you much good."
Zoe gaped at her friend. "Athena! What are you-"
The other girl shushed her and dragged her away down the hall. "It's alright, Zoe," she whispered. "The magic won't work for him." Or anyone else, for that matter. "I'll get you another one. I promise."
Meanwhile, Dave stood there, dumbfounded. Had the Goth girls really just given him the necklace without a fight?
At his side, Carson snickered. "She's right, man. You do look funny holding that girly necklace."
"Oh, shut up."
Dave studied the pendant in his hand for a while. It must have been coincidence that Athena had just let him have it after he made a wish. Magic didn't exist. Yet, something in the back of his head bugged him. Deciding to test his suspicions, he said, "I wish this necklace looked more manly."
Immediately, he blinked his eyes. When he opened them again, he found himself starring at a new piece of jewelry. The blue teardrop pendant had been reshaped into a stylized flame carved from the same material while the chain had become a bit less delicate. Dave's shock was tinged with self-satisfaction. His instincts had been correct after all.
"Dang!" Muttered a very mystified Carson. "Did that just happen?"
"I think so. Let's try something bigger. I wish these lockers were green."
As before, Dave closed his eyes for a moment. The next thing both boys knew, the long rows of tan colored lockers had changed to green. Meanwhile, nobody else down the hall seemed to notice anything strange. Reality must have been changed to fit!
