She might have been sensitive to how things were changing, but Athena was more affected by the changes happening than Mikey was. So while Mikey still retained his memories of how things were supposed to be, back before Jon was forced to wear Zoe's clothes, Athena's memories were a bit more muddled. She knew that Zendaya was supposed to be a girl named Zoe. And she had a vague memory that Zoe was supposed to not only be white, but also Goth, just like Gena. And Gena? She had a vague feeling that she was different now too. The problem was that when she pushed, trying her best to sort out her conflicting memories, the magic behind all of this seemed to push back, making her vague memories of previous realities disappear. That's what was happening right now.
No, she was mistaken. Zendaya might have been called Zoe before, she was sure of that, but a white Goth girl? No, the only member of the Gibson family who was like that was Gena, who Athena remembered was her friend. Or, at least, she used to be her friend, before Athena's age dropped her into middle school. Being in a different school, not to mention being about three years younger, made it harder to be friends.
Zendaya said goodbye, saying she had to get back to the high school.
"Okay. Bye, Zoe," Mikey said.
His adopted sister just stood there, a confused look on her face. "What is it with people calling me that? My name is Zendaya. You of all people should know that, Mikey."
Hold on, her name was what? Now Mikey was the one who was confused. He knew for sure that his sister was going by the name Zoe the last time he was with her. And that was after he made a wish to put an end to all these changes. But it seemed that the changes were still happening! And the stone was back at home, hidden away in his room, out of his reach!
"You okay, Mikey?" Zendaya asked, noticing the look of alarm on her brother's face.
"Uh, sorry, but I gotta go check something," Mikey said, then turned and ran to the nearest boy's restroom. If he was still changing, he needed to see how much.
"Your brother is kind of weird," Lilly told Zendaya.
"He's not usually like this," she said, then left to go back to the high school.
