"Oh man, I can't believe you've forgotten about tonight!" Milo exclaimed. "It's the mixed pairs volleyball semifinals, of course. Tell me you didn't forget that!"

"I didn't forget that," Jon told Milo. In this universe, Jon surmised, Jen had some sort of interest in volleyball. "What time does the game start?"

"The game?" Milo gasped breathlessly. "No. Our game against the Doubleton Duos starts at eight o'clock sharp!"

"OK, uh, look, I'll go and look for Jen," Jon temporized. "In the meantime, you can talk with our friend Karyn."

Karyn and Jen, of course, had no idea what was going on. Jen motioned both to be quiet, whispered, "volleyball," in Karyn's ear, and then handed her the phone.

Karyn raised her palms and eyebrows to signal helplessness, after which Jon drew finger circles as if to say, "Go on!" Karyn rolled her eyes.

"Uh, hi, is this Milo?" Karyn began cautiously. "Uh huh. Uh huh. Only a little. Uh huh. What's this about volleyball?"

Jon, meanwhile, pulled Jen into the hallway and announced," It sounds like we're in some kind of volleyball tournament, and our team made the semi-finals, which are tonight."

"But we never played volleyball. We can't possibly be good at it." Jen objected.

"Well, maybe in this universe, we did and we are," Jon speculated.

"I don't even know the rules," Jen complained. "If we were both good players, we'd certainly know the rules."

"Yeah, and we'd probably have a net in our back yard," Jon remarked while looking out the window. Then Jen looked outside and there it was: a volleyball net, all set up and ready for play.

"Maybe we should go and practice," Jon suggested, but then Karyn came looking for them.

"Both of you are on a volleyball team with Milo, his twin sister Lila, and two more pairs of twins named Terri, Larry, Carol, and Daryl," Karyn announced. "And they're all counting on you to play tonight. Now, Jen, Milo still wants to talk with you. If I were you, I'd just let Milo suggest a time."

"But neither of us have ever played volleyball! We don't even know the rules!" Jon objected.

"Look; just set a time with Milo and then say you have to hang up. Playing volleyball is the least of your problems," Karyn assured them.

"All right. Let's have it," Jen insisted.

"Oh, well, um, it seems the two of you are also dating Milo and his sister."
