Karyn had taken him by the hand to the school library where she planted him at a desk while she went to get him some of these magazines she had spoken of. He had been nervous that other kids would see him sitting there, not only because of what he was about to read, but also because he was now embarrassed that he didn't know how to properly put an outfit together.
She had returned to him quickly with a stack of four magazines, all from the same company. Cosmopolitan.
"Here, start with these," she had said with a smirk, "they'll point you in the right direction."
Jon had believed her. He trusted Karyn, a long time friend, who had no reason to lead him astray. He had heard of Cosmopolitan (or 'Cosmo' as he'd heard it referred to) but had never read it.
After he had been left alone, however, he was shocked. Each new page was a new revelation. He had not expected himself to be taking it so seriously, but Karyn had been right, he was reading it as if it were his new bible. There were so many fashion tips, so much advice on dieting, he felt very overwhelmed. He had taken a notepad out of his book bag and was furiously taking notes from the sacred magazine.
He felt like a new man, after pouring over only one magazine's fashion pages. When he got to the sex articles his mind was blown again. He never knew that there were so many sexy things to do with ice. He found himself amazed at the 30 things to do with a naked man (all of which he had never fathomed before). Each and every new sex position (all were new, since he had never had sex before) was like a whole new world opening up for him. He did feel a little bit confused that all of it was from a women's perspective, but he shook that off. This information was very important to him, and he was going to take it to heart.
By the time he was done with the last article of the last magazine, he was a changed man. He looked down at himself ashamed at what he was wearing. Never again would he clash so horrifically. He now felt empowered to be the best that he could be; with the tips and tricks he learned in just these few magazines he had changed his life. He wondered what else he could learn from the many he hadn't read.
Packing up his notes into his book bag (that'll have to go, he though, imagining a cute black purse) he stood up and resolved to subscribe to every fashion magazine that he could find, starting with Cosmo.
A quick glance at the clock gave him the shocking realization that he had spent the entire afternoon absorbing his new bible. He had missed every afternoon class. His spirits, lifted by his tranformative experience, now sank low once again. Jon knew that when he got home there would be hell to pay.
