When someone was sentenced and did not need some or all of their possessions, they were boxed up and taken to a warehouse. Then they could be given to others.
The Madison family existed in a variety of boxes, which had been cataloged and stowed. The new possessions for the Adams family had been taken from elsewhere. Thus, sometimes, Janice happened upon things she didn't remember. But she had been conditioned not to really notice.
And what of Jon's stone? Where had he hidden it? Was it carted away in one of the boxes? Thrown out? Karyn certainly didn't know.
