My first class of the day was math. Math wasn’t my strongest subject, I tended to prefer history. I wasn’t bad per se, I was just...average. As I entered the classroom I could see that a few students were already sitting in their seats. Our teacher, Ms. Glass, hadn’t arrived yet, so I settled into my own seat and put my books on the table.
I was joined not long after by my friend Mayrin Hunt. After Nathen, Mayrin was probably my second best friend. We shared a lot of interests together. While Nathen was into hir sports, Mayrin was more like me and a bit of a history buff.
We also liked watching the same kind of TV shows. My current favourite was Legends of Tomorrow, mostly because it involved time travel. I enjoyed seeing the different eras depicted on the show.
“Hey, gurl!” May greeted me as shi slumped down in hir seat and dropping hir bag on the floor.
“Hey, May! How’s it going?” I offered. While I had taken my books out May simply slouched in hir chair and stretched hir legs out.
“Not bad. Did you see last night’s episode of LoT?”
I blinked. Crap, I thought. With everything going on regarding Grandma’s death and the stone, I completely forgot to watch it.
“Oh, um… no. Sorry, I missed it.”
“What!?” May exclaimed in disbelief. “How could you miss it? Shi had raised hir voice a little. Not by much but it was enough to disturb the couple of bois sitting next to us because they shot us a disapproving stare.
“Um, my grandma died.” I explained to hir how when we got back from spring break, we found out that shi had died and it wasn’t long after that that I had found my inheritance, although I left that part out.
“Oh, Zane. I’m so sorry. I didn’t know.”
I shook my head.
“It’s ok, how could you have?”
May looked as though shi was going to ask something but we were interrupted by another member of our group: Dezlan Whitefield. Shi looked a little flustered and flopped down onto hir chair with a huge sigh of relief. Shi looked around.
“Hey gals!”
May and I looked at each other before May glanced down at hir watch, a surprised look came across hir face.
“Blimey, Dez. You’re actually on time for once.” Both May and I chuckled as Dez cracked a smile.
“Heh, yeah... Thanks for noticing, May. I kinda promised Dad and Mom that I would make a bit more effort to get to class on time this term.”
“Good for you Dez,” I told hir as I slapped hir on the back.
Dez was only just on time however, as not long after, shi was followed by our teacher. Ms. Glass.
“Good morning class,” she offered in greeting as shi swept in wearing a smart looking suit and tie and sat down at hir desk. “I trust that we all had a good spring break?”
A few students in the room acknowledged that they had as Ms. Glass got out hir paperwork for today’s lesson.
