Karyn woke up, groggy, in another room entirely, one she didn't recognize. A nurse was standing by the bed she was in; the same one that drugged her. "Welcome back to the world of the living, dear! You may feel a few strange sensations, and that's perfectly normal. Your transformation is a relatively simple one, and your new lot in life is one you know intimately anyway, so there's no need for hypnotron sessions. We just need to keep you asleep during the process and then you'll be shipped off to your new home. I just wanted to come in and visit with you, and let you know the score, so to speak. Goodbye, dear!"
With that, the nurse cheerfully injected her with something, presumably the same substance, and she was back to sleep in moments. When she woke up again, it was nearly instantaneous, as if a switch in her mind were flipped. She was looking up at a ceiling fan similar to hers, but the pullcord hanging off of it, with a star on the end of it, was definitely not hers. It looked more like...
Karyn looked down at her body, a normal male body in a simple T-shirt and jeans, lying on top of a bed she'd sat and laid down on on many, many occasions. Her left hand had a white birthmark on the back of it, just like... Jon's. I'm Jon, she thought. Then who the hell is Jon?!
She had to admit, it was a little arousing, being in the body of the boy she'd had a crush on for years, but the reaction that body gave was most definitely not arousing. "Ugh," she grunted. "This is... it isn't so bad. Oh my God, don't tell me Jon is me..." Karyn was creeped out by the thought, and bile rose in her throat.
The door opened, and Jon's mom, her mom now, came in. "Good morning, dear," she said in a cheery voice, looking at Karyn with a smile that didn't reach her eyes. "You're Jon now, dearie. I know this is a lot to take in, and it's perfectly fine if you don't act like him immediately; I'm sure a hypnotron is on its way here now. Just relax."
Karyn - she wasn't ready to call herself Jon, not at all - looked up at Jon's mother with a look of confusion and pity. It must be horrible losing her son, but wasn't she told who her new son used to be? "What's wrong, dear?"
"Nothing, M-mom," she said, choking it out; it was difficult, but it was a nice gesture. Jon's mother was acting very strange, but Karyn just thought it was the shock of suddenly having Jon back. "I'm fine. What time is it?"
"It's..." she started, looking at the clock above Karyn's new bed. Karyn cursed herself for not remembering it. "Nine-thirty, but it's Saturday. Don't worry, dear, no school yet," Jon's mom said, smiling brightly and trying to sound happy. "Are you hungry?"
Karyn shook her head. "No, not yet, thanks. I'm going to just... play some video games for now, I guess. I'll get something when I'm hungry." Jon's mom nodded, looking at the TV and the PS2 for a moment before looking sharply away, back at Karyn.
"That's fine. When the hypnotron gets here I'll bring it right in for you," she said, leaving. Karyn sighed. I should've told her it's not coming. She'll find out soon enough but it'd be better to hear it from me... wouldn't it?
"Mom?" she called out, immediately regretting it.
The answer took a moment. "Yes, dear?"
"Uh... no, nothing! I forgot!" she said quickly.
"Okay then," Jon's mom said from the hall, and Karyn was again struck with the thought that something wasn't right, but she couldn't quite put her finger on it. Maybe it would come to her while she was playing Final Fantasy X.
