I placed my phone back down on its wireless charging pad and slipped out of bed. I picked up the jeans that I had worn yesterday off the floor and grabbed a T-shirt and some underwear. I exited my bedroom just in time to see Jonatha, my older brother, exit the bathroom. Hei wore a soft pink towel around hys chest and had another one wrapped around hys hair.

“Took you long enough,” I teased as hei shot me a glare.

“Hey! It’s not easy being a boi, you know. It doesn’t take us five minutes to get ready. We have to pick out our outfits, do our makeup and our hair. Goddess, you gurls have it sooo easy.”

It was a bit of a family secret that Jonatha hated being a boi. Much to Dad’s disappointment, Jonatha preferred to wear a t-shirt and jeans when hei lounged around in the house. Of course, hei would never tell hys friends this as evidenced by hys dyed-blonde hair as hei tried to keep up appearances.

“Yeah, yeah, bro. We know,” I said as I rolled my eyes. “You hate being a boi.” Natha glared at me before hei returned to hys room. I shook my head as I took my turn in the bathroom.

I couldn’t understand it. Why would any boi be miserable? My thoughts turned to my younger brother, Michelle-Anne. Michelle-Anne was the complete opposite of Jonatha as hei relished in all things boily. Hei loved make-up and clothes, and if you asked hym, hei would tell you that hys collection of Kinnabelle dolls was the largest in Lake Point.

Dropping my clothes on the floor, I took my shower, and in less than ten minutes, I was done. I grinned to myself as I recalled Jonatha’s earlier comment. I dried myself off and got dressed before I went downstairs to grab breakfast.

Mom had already left for work as was becoming the norm recently. The problem with Mom’s success was that shi spent more and more time at the office. I only really ever saw hir at the weekend.

Dad, however, barely left the house. Like all married bois, hei was a househusbenne. Hys job was to look after the kids and clean the house.

“Morning Dad,” I greeted hym as I entered the kitchen and sat down at my usual spot. I grabbed a box of cereal and poured myself a bowl.

“Morning sweetie,” Dad replied as he looked up from the dishwasher to acknowledge my entrance. Hei was wearing a royal blue capped-sleeve tea dress and matching heels. His light brown hair was cut short and curled around hys ears.

“Good morning honey,” hei replied in that deep but soft voice of hys. “Sleep well?”

I nodded as I turned my attention to my little brother.

“Hey, sprout,” I smiled as I ruffled hys hair gently.

“Zane!” Hei whined as hei batted my hands away and quickly checked that hys pigtails were still presentable. I chuckled as I returned my attention to my cereal. We were joined shortly afterwards by princess Jonatha, hei hated that nickname.

Jonatha wore a burgundy top with ruffled sleeves and a black pleated skirt. Hys blonde-dyed hair was tied back into a high ponytail. Hei had enough time to scoff, in an unladdielike manner, hys bowl of grapefruit before we heard a car horn outside.

Hei quickly drank hys glass of orange juice before announcing. “That’ll be Biffany.” And before we could say anything else hei had dashed out of the kitchen, picking up hys handbag on the way and headed out of the door.

Dad blinked for a moment and then sighed. “I suppose that’s what I get for encouraging hym to be a cheerleader, I guess,” he muttered, shaking hys head. Hei then turned hys attention to me and Michelle-Anne.

“You’d better get going as well, honey. I need to drop Michelle-Anne at school before I get started on the housework.”

I nodded and, having finished my cereal, I got up and went to collect my school things.
