Zoey noticed the weight of her breasts moving as she ran back up the stairs and to her room. She'd been so preoccupied by the flash and so focused on her new body that she'd hardly noticed anything about her bedroom, so she wondered how much she could piece together about the life she now lived.
As she opened the door, she realized there were two beds on opposite sides. The walls were a light pink; next to one bed, "Zoey" had been painted on the wall, and "Mikayla" was painted by the other bed. So I share a room now. Huh. Zoey looked at her side and saw more clues to the life she lived: several boxes of makeup and a mirror by her desk, a cheerleading outfit hanging on the closet door, a cell phone in a sparkly case. Cheerleader, huh? As she picked up the phone sitting on her bed, the photo on the lock screen was of her with two people: a dark-skinned girl wearing the same cheer outfit as her and an Asian girl in a shimmery gold dress. The three were smiling; Zoey was holding the Asian girl's hand and was even wearing hoop earrings.
“Missing Vanessa already, huh?” a voice behind Zoey remarked. Mikayla came in, taking off her shirt and throwing it in the hamper before she sat down next to her. Zoey was caught off guard as she was unsure which one in the picture Mikayla was referring to. “I mean, she is a cute girl. I wish I had someone like her.” It appeared that Mikayla and Zoey had a pretty good relationship, to the point that they could talk about relationships and stuff. Maybe Mikayla was Zoey’s key to finding out about her new life.
“Yeah, but when am I not missing her?” Zoey replied, realizing one of the two girls must be her girlfriend. She guessed it was the one who wasn’t a cheerleader.
“That’s true,” Mikayla replied, putting an arm around her big sister. The way Mikayla acted made Zoey feel like she was talking to a younger version of herself. “Bryanna’s cute too… Makes me wish she was mine, almost.”
“Don’t move too fast. Before you know it you’ll be old enough, and if I’m any indication you’ll find someone just as amazing.”
As Zoe looked, her phone buzzed with a text from a contact named Karina. “Hey girl,” it read simply. Karyn? Zoey thought back to before the wish.
“Gosh, it’s amazing how you and Karina are actually friends now. Two years ago she hated you so much. I wish I could work things out with Rachel May. What a bitch.”
Zoey was silent for a second, processing the fact that she once hated her former best friend’s guts here. “If you’re lucky, she’ll mellow out. But some bitches remain bitches and you can’t try and change them,” she added, thinking of a certain Sarah McMillan.
Mikayla pulled out her own phone and started scrolling through it, leaving Zoey to take a better look at hers. The African girl on her lock screen photo was Bryanna Davis, she learned looking at her recent texts.
Her contacts showed some very different stories. Jeremy McMillan was a goth boy, and he apparently was good friends with Jon, as there were a couple of photos of them in her camera roll. Karina was indeed the old Karyn and still a girl. Vanessa’s last name was Kim. There were a few people Zoey didn’t recognize right off the bat but had somewhat or completely familiar names: a boy named Heather Morgan who was one of Karina’s friends, Jasmine Duncan, Stephanie Farber, Lauren Drullers, and Amber Levine. She also noticed a bunch of boys that were in a group called “Football :(”: Biff Meadows, Moose Matthews, Mel Smith, and Tim Sanders.
This is exhausting. Zoey laid on her bed and took off her shirt like Mikayla had earlier, revealing her own pink bra. And that too.
