Jon looked at the list for a long time before finally deciding which option to pick. He reached up and touched the option labeled CIVILIAN.
In the blink of an eye, the holographic display disappeared, then a moment later, the darkness of the room was consumed by light.
He found himself standing in the middle of an indoor mall. The commotion he heard told him that a lot of people were there, and as he looked around, he realized that what he heard was true. This mall was twice as crowded as the one in his hometown.
"Joan," he heard a girl say. It kind of sounded like his name, but wasn't, so he just shrugged it off. But then he heard the girl say it again. "Joan." The voice was closer this time, and was filled with more urgency. But Jon still ignored it. Instead, he started to walk away from the voice and go check out one of the stores. Suddenly, someone grabbed his shoulder and spun him around. He saw a fairly attractive blond-haired teenage girl standing in front of him. She was dressed similarly to someone like Sarah McMillan or one of her friends.
"Joan, where are you going?" she asked. "I need to talk to you."
It was at this time that Jon realized that she was talking to him. But why was she calling him "Joan"? That was a girl's name. Wasn't it?
