Brenda Williams sighed as she put all the items that hadn't sold into boxes. She made some money, but not really enough. After packing up the third box, she moved onto the next table. It seemed that she was stuck with her daughter's things for a little longer. She picked up Sydney's favorite necklace, the one with the ankh. She remembered her daughter wearing that all the time ... except for the day she died. It was odd. For years, Sydney and that necklace were inseparable. But the day she died, she wasn't wearing it. It was strange, but Brenda never really thought about that oddity until right now. Why wasn't her daughter wearing her necklace that day?

She lifted up the necklace and looked at it. There was nothing overly special about it. She wondered why her daughter loved wearing it so much. She knew that the ankh was some sort of symbol for eternal life. Maybe that's why her daughter liked it? She didn't know.

Brenda was about to put the necklace into the fourth box, but then stopped. She was going to store the boxes in her attic, along with all the other long lost and forgotten treasures of the past, which would stay mostly forgotten for some time to come. Her daughter's favorite necklace didn't deserve that fate. So, with a little hesitation, Brenda put her dead daughter's necklace around her own neck. This way, it was like a piece of her daughter was always with her.

She had no idea how much that was true.

About a minute after putting the necklace on, Brenda felt a little dizzy. She had to grab the edge of the table to keep from falling over. When she regained her balance, however, something was different. She looked around and saw that she still had to pack up the rest of the yard sale stuff ... but she suddenly didn't really care. She shook her head, trying to clear out those thoughts. What was she thinking? She couldn't just keep this stuff sitting out on her driveway. Someone could just come by and steal it. Taking a deep breath, clearing her head, she continued to pack up the unsold items and when she was done, she took the boxes and tables inside. The yard sale was officially over.

Brenda walked to the living room. She really needed to sit down and take a rest. On her way, she passed the hallway mirror. What she saw in the mirror was herself, but something wasn't right. It's like there was someone else there too. She shook her head again. She was just tired, that's all. She continued to the living room and sat down on the sofa. Then she drifted off to sleep.
