As soon as he moved getting the medallion back to the top of the list, a lie began to form in Hammer's new cranium. Specifically, the lie she was going to tell the police. The medallion was something my grandmother had owned and had left me when she died. I had been considering selling it the day the horrible man had shown up and threatened us, but I think the police accidentally took it as evidence before I showed it to Paul.
No, wait--she paused and looked down at her stunning new body. After I showed it to Paul. She was certain she could make him "remember" seeing it.
After considering the list carefully for a minute, Hammer committed it to memory and closed the file without saving it. She probably didn't need to--the cops didn't know anything yet--but old habits die hard, and her old habits were telling her not to leave the cops tracks between bodies.
