The cell phone only said "Work." Drew was torn. If she let it go to voicemail, she might be over it, but if she answered, she could just say she was at school or off on the skating trip and get out of it for the week.
Ultimately, she decided that fortune favored the bold and answered the phone. The voice on the other end was relieved.
"Michelle, thank goodness you picked up. Are you at home right now?"
Drew smiled. She was safe. "No, I'm at school right now."
"Finally, I found someone."
Drew's smile faded. She had guessed wrong.
"Michelle, I know you aren't supposed to start work for another couple of weeks, but with this crazy weather we're really short-staffed. If you're at school you should be on some high ground and not quite flooded in. Can you come in to work today? We really need the help."
Drew was about to make another excuse when the voice spoke again. "I'll pay you double for the day. I'll even get you the check by the end of the day. I really need your help, Michelle."
Suddenly, Drew was more enthused. If he worked all day as Michelle, he would have to bluff his way through her job, but she wouldn't have to worry about running into someone on campus that wondered why she wasn't at the skating competition. Also, with that paycheck, she could probably find somewhere else to stay until the waters fell and she could get back to the skating rink to retrieve her keys and clothes. Plus, she could probably by some clothes that weren't as "party-girl," and not have to steal clothes from the real Michelle.
"Michelle? Are you there? What do say? Can you help me out?"
