Lightning crackled all around the ice rink. Inside, the lights flickered off, then popped back to life.
Only Drew and Kate were left at the rink. The other attendants had left earlier, deciding to make a break for their homes and try to beat the worst of the storm. Kate had been too afraid to drive, so Drew had decided to stay with her until she was comfortable leaving. He had hoped the storm would let up; he had been wrong. Already he could see water rising at the edges of the island. The rink was on the highest part, so he knew they were safe, but they could soon be trapped.
"Kate, if you don't want to leave right now, we might have to think about finding somewhere here to spend the night. I'm not thrilled with the idea, but I think that's what we're down to."
Kate looked out the doors. The rain was coming down in sheets and lightning struck constantly. Wind whipped trees and bent down a street sign. She looked up at Drew, fear in her eyes.
"Drew, I'm sorry, but I'm not going to drive in that weather."
Drew forced a smile. "It's OK, Kate. Don't worry about it. Let's get the master keys and get into one of the executive suites; they have nice couches in there so we can at least get some sleep."
