Tom meanwhile was sitting in a room to side of the office and in front of a camera. “There you go I will have this ready for you in a second. Go and sit with the other new girl.” The school secretary told him. Tom knew better than to argue with her. Mrs Mahoney was famous throughout the school for two things, the amount of times she had got a student in trouble with a teacher for saying something she thought was wrong. The other thing she was famous for was her temper which had led to the first thing most of the time.
Tom took the seat next to the new girl whose name Tom had not had a chance to find out as he had been told to have his picture taken right away. “I’m Jane.” She said turning towards Tom. Tom was about to tell her his name but stopped. How could he explain why he was wearing the same uniform as her without sounding like an idiot. As if by magic Mrs Mahoney call Jane over to her to be given her student ID. A few seconds later she called “Tammy come and get yours.”
Tom looked around to see who she was shouting on. “Tammy, Come and get your ID card dear.” Mrs Mahoney said this time looking directly at Tom leaving no doubt in his mind that she was speaking to him. Tom slowly got out of his seat and walked over to Mrs Mahoney.
She handed him a small laminated card. Tom took the card from Mrs Mahoney and looked down at it. Only then did he realise that something was wrong. In his sister’s bag that he was carrying was his own student ID card. He remembered the pale blue background of the card he had been issued with a few weeks back at the start of the new school year. It was like the one he now held but different in so many ways. He was about to say something to Mrs Mahoney when the office door opened.
