The die tumbled and landed... six. Mikey held his breath and clenched his eyes shut. He could feel his bones growing, hair sprouting all over him, his clothes morphing. What he couldn't sense was that reality was changing all around him.
Mike opened his eyes and looked at the cuffs on his collared shirt. They were unbuttoned and rolled up a little bit. He turned and looked at the woman across from him. The first thing he thought was "Mother" but that wasn't right. Not anymore.
Mike remembered two distinct realities very suddenly. In one, he was born in 1995, a big fan of the new Transformers cartoons, and wanted to play baseball. The one that made the most sense, though, was one where he was born in 1978. He fondly remembered the original Transformers show from his childhood and though he enjoyed baseball, made a very comfortable living as a rock n' roll promoter. In fact, he'd brought his favourite nephew Jon to a U2 concert earlier this year. And Marissa Gibson looked so much like his mother because she was the spitting image of their mother. Mike and Marissa were siblings, despite the age disparity.
"Uncle Mike!" cried Jon as she finally came down the stairs. "Did you finish taking your turn?"
Mike smiled. "Looks like I came out of that one unharmed."
Jon shot him a look of envy after glancing down at Zoe's body. "Lucky you."
Mike looked down and saw a wedding band on his finger and wondered exactly what was going on there... did he have a wife somewhere? He didn't feel ready for any commitment. For some reason there were details of his new life that were very cloudy. Maybe the game hadn't quite defined them. The wedding band was quite puzzling. He looked down at the card.
It read, "Be warned. Age does not always bring wisdom. Your actions may have serious consequences."
Mike passed the dice along to Karyn.
