Jon knelt on the floor, crying her eyes out. "Oh my," her mother said, "what's the matter? Did...did the test show...?"
Karyn nodded. "Yes. Both of our changes are permanent." She looked sidelong at Jon. I'll leave the important part up to you, she thought. Will you tell her?
Jon thought for a moment. She was scared to tell her mom the truth, but...what did she have left to lose? They'd never get the stone back, she knew that much. By now, it was buried under yards of sludge and refuse - she'd never find it, not if she looked her whole life. She really was stuck in this form. And...if she had to live with such a huge change in her life, she didn't want to go through it deceiving her mom. She sniffled a bit before breaking out in a fresh crying fit.
"Mom," she sobbed, "there's more to the story. When Grandpa died, he gave me a magic stone that granted the wishes of the holder. We...we wished for the common cold to be replaced by something harmless but with less mucus and stuff, and...we got this. It changes history for everybody who doesn't hear the wish, so you won't remember that. And the stone...is the one you threw out. Oh Mom, I'm so sorry!"
Jon's mother held her sobbing daughter tight. "It's all right," she whispered. "It's all right, Jennifer."
