"Rachel, I thought I told you to go clean the attic."
"Mom," she whined. "I'm meeting my friends at the mall."
"Not until you clean up the attic. Now get up there."
Rachel groaned, then went upstairs. "Why does she always have to be so mean?" she whispered to herself, on the way up.
Looking around at the dusty attic, she sighed. This was gonna take forever. She would much rather be with her friends than in this dirty place.
Sighing again, she began to dust off the old furniture and boxes that were scattered around the room. About fifteen minutes into it, though, she stopped. On the floor of the attic, wedged between two boxes, was a stone. It had an odd purple tint to it. Rachel had never seen a purple stone before.
She picked it up and looked at it.
From below, she heard her mom. "You didn't stop did you? Get going."
Ugh. Why can't she be nice to me at least once? she thought.
Then her mom said something else. Something that startled Rachel. "You know what? Let me clean the attic. You go out with your friends."
"Huh?" Rachel said, turning around. Her mom couldn't have possibly said what she thought she said. Could she? She walked down from the attic and saw her mom smiling. "What are you so happy about?" Rachel asked.
"I'm just so glad I have such a lovely daughter as you."
"Are you okay, Mom?" She was actually acting nice.
"Of course, I'm okay. Now scoot along. I'm sure you don't want to keep your friends waiting."
Rachel could only stare at her mom, as she walked past her and up into the attic.
"What's happening?" she whispered to herself.
What Rachel didn't know (yet) was that the purple stone was one of the magic stones and had the power to change other people's emotions. All Rachel had to do was touch the stone and mentally change the emotions of someone else. If someone was sad, she could make them happy. If someone was mean, she could make them nice. But Rachel wouldn't find all of this out until she got to the mall and met up with her friends.
