Jon walked up the basement stairs to the first floor of the house and opened the door.
"Jon. Oh my god, where have you been?" his mom asked right away. "I was worried sick."
"What time is it?" Jon asked.
"It's almost midnight. Were you down in the basement the whole time? What were you doing down there? How come you didn't answer me when I ..." She stopped and stared at him. "Did you hurt yourself?"
"Huh?"
"Your head. It's bleeding," his mom said.
Jon reached up and touched his forehead. There was a small cut there. He must have gotten it when he fell to the basement from his bedroom. "It's nothing," he said.
But his mom acted like he was in mortal danger. She grabbed his arm and pulled him into the bathroom, pulling out bandages when they got there.
And that's when she noticed the armlet. It was sticking out of Jon's pocket.
"What's this?" she asked, picking it up.
"Mom, be careful with that," he said, panicking a bit.
