that we were projected into the bodies of our 30-year old selves and forward in time to the year that we were thirty."
Nothing happened.
Karyn looked at Jon. "What happened?"
"I don't know," said Jon. "I hope, after all this, the rock isn't broken."
"Ask the rock - it might tell you."
Jon looked at the rock. "Tell me what happened." Silence. "Of course," realised Jon, "I have to express it as a wish. I wish the rock would tell me why it could not complete the last wish."
A voice appeared from out of thin air, echoing around Jon and Karyn's head. " I could not complete the wish because there is no future to go to. The world was destroyed, along with yourselves, in three months time when the world went to war and all human life was wiped out by nuclear strikes."
Jon looked up at Karyn, shocked. "Oh my God. I wish you'd tell me why the world went to war."
The rock spoke again. "The rock fell into the hands of a fanatical terrorist. He wished that the middle east would strike against the west, which is what they did with the nuclear weapons they had developed from another wish. The United States retaliated, and before long, the rest of the world joined in. The world, by the time you would be thirty, would be a burnt out cinder hanging in space."
Karyn said, "There must be some way we can stop this, but how?"
Jon looked at the rock. "I wish you'd tell me how I can prevent this future coming true."
