Jon handed the remote control to Karyn and she looked at it for a moment in her hand before pushing her thumb down on the comically large button.
Suddenly, a car passing by the school turned into a yellow school bus, which drove into the school parking lot.
"It turns cars into school buses?" Jon asked. "That doesn't really seem all that interesting."
"Well, let me try it on something else," Karyn said. She looked around and saw a man jogging past them on the sidewalk in front of the school. She aimed the remote at him and pressed the button. Suddenly, the man's attire changed from a T-shirt and running shorts to a shirt and tie and beige slacks. In his hand was a briefcase.
"Okay, what happened?" Jon asked. "Is it just random transformations?"
He got his answer when he watched one of the students walk up to the man and call him Mr. Walkerton and then ask him about something school-related.
"He's a teacher," Karyn said. "I mean, he is now." She looked down at the device in her hand and realized what it was. "It changes things and people to match their surroundings. The car turned into a school bus and the jogger turned into a teacher, because they were both near the school."
"Everyone seems like they know who this Mr. Walkerton is, except for us. Why is that?" Jon asked.
"I don't know. Maybe it doesn't change the memories of the ones using the device or the people close to the ones using the device."
"Let's try it out some more. But not out here. Let's go to a different environment," Jon suggested. He had a few in mind.
