"Let's go to an empty room or field," said Jon. "Someplace we can stand in the middle of without being next to a wall, so we know who the nearest person is."
They went outside to the back of the building, where there was a small parking lot near a stretch of lawn, and walked to the middle of the lawn.
Jon looked around and said "Well, if you want to test that thing we can wait to see who comes along."
"Why do we need to wait?" asked Karyn.

"I'm here!" said Karyn. "If it does the nearest person I just need to make sure I'm standing near you and there isn't anyone closer. You were so close to the wall that it was possible for Mrs. Finch to be the closest person, but right She now, I'm the closest person."
Karyn pressed the button. And Jon disappeared. She looked at the device and it was showing 4 minutes 47 seconds and counting down.
Wait, thought Karyn. If I press the button and it gets rid of the nearest person, puts Jon there, and makes him think he's that person, then it should put Jon in my place. Which means I must not really be Karyn. I'm Jon and I think I'm Karyn. Does that mean I'm a guy? I feel like I'm a girl.
She got out her mirror and looked in it. It seemed to be herself, but then she remembered. Something Jon had told her... no, really, she must have told Karyn it, she just thinks she's Karyn and she thinks Jon told her. Quickly he ran over to Karyn's locker. "It worked!" he said. "Karyn, what do you remember?"
"Remember?" said Karyn. "I went to my locker to... it's funny, I don't really remember why I came to my locker, or even coming to my locker. It must have worked like you said!"
"Yeah, it did. I was in your shoes and I thought I was you as soon as you pressed the button. When I came back, you didn't remember what I did but you didn't notice anything strange either until I told you...."
"Hmm," said Karyn. "I think I want to try it again. This time...."
