"Yes," Jon said, "I remember everything. I was Mrs. Finch. I had her memories, her personality. I had no thoughts of ever being anybody else. It was so strange. I can't recall any of her specific memories now, but I remember everything I did and felt while I was her."
"That's amazing! Tell me more."
"Well, I was just leaving the bathroom, then I ran into you. I felt a bit embarassed and flustered, then I kept going down the hall. I said hi to Mr. Davis, embarassed that he might have seen me fall, then I went into the library and sat behind my desk, and resumed reading my copy of Chicken Soup for the Mother's Soul. And then I was right back here. What the hell happened, anyway?"
"It was that remote you wished up. I guess it puts you in other peoples' shoes, more or less. And look, there's more to this thing than we initially thought," She said, showing Jon the display she'd found. It had reset itself to 5 minutes, but wasn't counting down. "What would anybody use this for?"
"I don't know. Maybe it's some kind of empathy device. You know, walk a mile in each other's shoes, that sort of thing."
"Maybe. It would be pretty good for spying, too."
"But why did it make me Mrs. Finch? It doesn't have any targeting system."
"She was the next person I saw," Karyn said. "You said she was in the bathroom, so maybe she was closest to you when I pushed the button. I had the antenna pointed at you, then you became Mrs. Finch because she was the closest target."
"But what happened to Mrs. Finch?" The two bolted to the library, only to find Mrs. Finch reading the exact book Jon had mentioned. She looked up at the two.
"Karyn, I thought I told you to get to class. I don't want to have to call the principal's office."
"Sorry, ma'am. On my way." Jon and Karyn left the library, carefully supressing their excitement. "I can't believe this, Jon. She didn't notice a thing. Imagine what we could do with this thing!" Her mind bristled with possibilities, but Jon looked a bit worrisome.
"I don't know Karyn. I don't think I'm real comfortable bouncing around other peoples lives."
"Don't worry, Jon. The timer brings you back. I just want to try it one more time."
"Alright," Jon said, "but not here. Let's go..."
