For our heroes, things seemed to be in a desperate situation! Miss Amazing was trapped, helpless, playing out the chess game of the Queen! She was forced to toss Amazing Boy, who had arrived just in the nick of time, off the board! Can our heroes survive? Let's see!
Jon, finding herself helpless, had been ordered to remove Amazing Boy from the board. She couldn't control her own body, but was just, inexplicably, standing still.
"What?" said the Black Queen.
"The rules!" exclaimed Miss Amazing. "The rules only allow me to move as a chess piece. I can't move when it isn't my turn. You've outsmarted yourself, Queen!"
"NEVER!" yelled the Black Queen. She moved one space since it was her turn, sidestepping Amazing Boy and then ordering "Now, White Queen. Remove the intruder!"
It was now Jon's turn. Jon found herself helplessly standing in place until Amazing Boy crossed a diagonal line where she could catch up to him with a standard Queen move. Travelling the diagonal, she found herself compelled to punch Amazing Boy out of the chess board and into the bleachers, which broke in a cloud of sawdust and splinters. Then Jon continued her move, having only been able to remove Amazing Boy during the course of a normal chess move.
Amazing Boy, who looked like a male Karyn in a mask and who was pretty much unrecognizeable to anyone not familiar with magical sex changes, pulled himself up, rubbing his bruised arms and face. "Miss Amazing, fight it!" he yelled.
Julian said "Wait, Amazing Boy! There may be a solution... Get my laptop! It's over by the wall." He turned as much as he could while in the chains, motioning towards the gym's east wall.
Amazing Boy, with his super-speed, ran over, picked up the laptop, and brought it to Julian.
"Turn it on!" said Julian. After Amazing Boy obeyed, he said "Now, to the start menu...."
After a series of instructions and one reboot caused by a Windows crash, Julian had managed to talk Amazing Boy through running a chess program and reprogramming it for the revised chess rules used by the Queen. Meanwhile, the combatants were continuing, the extra White Queen having already been taken.
Suddenly Amazing Boy looked at the screen and yelled out the move displayed there. "Knight to King's Bishop 7!" The white knight on Miss Amazing's side made the specified move.
"Stop that!" yelled the Black Queen. But as she had told our heroine, she was stuck in the chessboard too. She couldn't stop Amazing Boy!
The Black Queen made a move, which Amazing Boy typed into the laptop. Then he yelled out the next move shown by the computer, so Miss Amazing could make it. After that, it was an incredibly one-sided game; Julian had programmed Miss Amazing's way to a sure-fire chess victory. In the last move, the White Queen slid into the Black Queen's square, and punched her once right between her breasts. The Black Queen fell over, like a chess king during a resignation, and the board, black and white costumes, chains, and all other evidence of the chess game disappeared.
Far away, Zoe Donaldson, Jon's younger sister and Mistress of the Mystic Arts, was sitting in front of a pentagram with her legs crossed. Sensing the dispelling of the mystic force embodied in the chess game, she thought to herself, "finally, the last game of Zazzred-Gu has ended!"
"No!" yelled the Queen. "I could surely have won! If it wasn't for the interference of Amazing Boy and an ordinary student. And that was the last of the ancient games... I will never be able to do that again." She turned around and ran for the exit.
The exit door opened and in popped Sarah McMillan. "Miss Amazing!" she yelled.
The Queen, running towards Sarah, prepared to kick her but somehow could not. Instead she turned and ran back--right into the waiting fists of Miss Amazing and Amazing Boy, who with a one-two punch knocked her to the floor and into unconsciousness.
"Let's get this mask off and see who she is," said Miss Amazing, meanwhile retrieving her own mask from the Queen's body and putting it back on. She also whispered to Amazing Boy, "Sorry about that, Karyn, I couldn't help punching you."
"It's okay," whispered Amazing Boy back. "Superheroes don't get concussions anyway. I'm just glad I noticed I had that mask at all."
Amazing Boy then nodded and reached for the domino-shaped mask on the Queen's face. When he removed it, everyone gasped--the Queen's true appearance was identical to Sarah McMillan, who was standing right there in the room next to her.
"How could this be?" wondered Miss Amazing.
"I know the answer," said Sarah. "Why the Queen wasn't able to hurt me, and why she looks like me. Because the Queen is..."
