Jon indeed changed back when he took off the mask. Everything seemed like it was going as planned.
Until a couple of days later, at school, Jon was talking with his friends and they started talking about Miss Amazing. Which wasn't unexpected, since the way the magic of the stone works, it was as if he had been Miss Amazing all along.
"I saw her face!" said Julian.
"No shit?" said Chad, the stoner.
"Yeah, I did! It was a month ago when she stopped that bank holdup. I was there and I asked her to see her face. She let Amazing Boy take off her mask for her. He told me he needed to be careful about her powers.
"Her powers?" asked Chad.
"Yeah," replied Julian. "If she takes it off herself, she turns into her civilian ID and loses her powers. If someone else takes it off for her, nothing happens. Anyway, she was cute. Hey, Jon, you know, she looked a little like you?"
Jon muttered "That is strange, isn't it?"
But then Jon realized Karyn's wish wasn't quite worded right. She wished that Miss Amazing would turn back to Jon when she took off the mask. Which means that if someone else took the mask off of her, she wouldn't transform. Still, the oversight was harmless. There might even be some day when Jon would want to get out of costume and stay a girl. He could just ask Karyn to take off the mask for him and he wouldn't become Jon until he put it on again and took it off himself.
"Yeah," replied Julian. "Maybe she's your long-lost cousin or something...."
"Wait a minute," said Jon. "Amazing Boy?"
"Amazing Boy," replied Julian. "You know, her sidekick? With the same powers as her?"
Sidekick? Uh-oh. The stone had changed things so that he had been Miss Amazing all along. Which means a lot of other changes in history too to go along with that. Whatever in the new history had given him his powers must have given someone else the powers too. But who could Amazing Boy be?
Jon stuck his hand in his pocket, where he kept the stone and the mask, and said "I wish I knew who Amazing Boy really was."
"We all wish we knew who both of them were," replied Chad.
But only Jon had a wishing stone, and when he made that wish, disguised as a sentence of normal conversation, he immediately learned that Amazing Boy was....
