Jon used to eat lunch with Karyn a lot, but now that Pete had moved into town and they had made the wishes, Joan ate lunch with Pete instead.
"I don't know, Pete," said Joan. "I mean I love you and all that, but the rest of it... I don't think it's working."

"Look, Pete, I was born a guy, I changed, but I didn't change that much. If I didn't have you it'd be even worse. I don't like wearing dresses, or nail polish, and there are entirely too many cute things in my room. My hair keeps getting in my eyes, and do you know how hard it is to brush and clean and maintain good long hair? I don't like this, I want to be like I was as a guy instead."

"I appreciate the thought, Pete, but have some consideration for my feelings too! You helped make me a girl, and I can't change back--the least you could do is be a little more supportive when I'm having problems with it."
"Okay, okay, Joan. You know there's a lot you could do. None of what you said are really things a girl has to be. There isn't exactly a law about nail polish, you know."
"True," said Joan. "Or I can use a wish. I've been thinking about it all week."
"Hmm," replied Pete. "Have you made a decison yet?"
"I think I have," replied Joan. "I..."
