Pete stopped in mid-sentence. He remembered that the note said that wishes made within earshot of others will be noticed by those that heard the wish. He looked at Jon and Karyn as they had a lovers spat over the confidentiality of the rock, neither of them were paying any attention to him. Pete turned around and whispered,"I wish that sometime today Jon would accidentally make a wish that will change him into a girl and that he will be unable to ever change back into a guy." The stone grew warm in his hand as the wish was granted.
"Perfect," thought Pete,"Jon will be a girl so he will be taken out of the picture, which will leave Karyn a little more receptive to my advances. Plus, they will both think that Jon's new 'condition' will be nobodies fault but his own."
Pete turned back around right when Jon and Karyn's argument was coming to an end.
"Look you guys, I don't want you two to fight over this," said Pete with a false tone of sincerity,"I promise that I won't tell anybody about this rock or that I won't make any bad wishes on it. Here's your rock back, Jon, I don't want to risk making any wishes on it. It's too dangerous for my taste, who knows what it could do." Pete handed Jon back his stone.
"I'm sorry, Jon, I guess it's alright if Pete knows. He's a pretty cool guy that can keep a secret. Let's just not broadcast the fact that we have a magical wishing stone," said Karyn. Pete couldn't help but smile when he heard Karyn call him a 'cool guy.'
"Don't worry, Pete, we trust you with our little secret. You've always been a good friend to the both of us," said Jon as he pocketed the stone.
"I swear that I would never do anything that would result in either of you being harmed. So where are you two heading to?"
