Jennifer got back to her room to find Karyn rooting through her dresser. "What are you doing?" she asked.

Karyn stood up. "I was just looking at your clothing selection."

"What about it?"

"It's changed." Karyn gestured toward the middle drawer, which she had open. "There's a notable absence of pants," she said.

Jennifer looked through the dresser. Karyn was right; there were no pants in her dresser at all, only skirts and dresses. "What the...why in the..." she mused.

"I dunno," said Karyn. "Maybe us catgirls just wear these because it's easier than threading a tail through the back of a pair of pants."

Jennifer lifted her skirt and craned her neck to look back over her shoulder. The panties she was wearing had a hole for her tail. "Why aren't pants made with holes, then?" she wondered.

"Maybe we've just always done it that way," Karyn suggested. "Let's look it up."

They went back to the encyclopedia set and found a short entry on pants. It said that catgirl pants weren't manufactured because stores didn't want to stock more species-specific clothing than they had to, and catgirls in general didn't want them badly enough to make it worth the stores' while. Even underwear, it turned out, was manufactured unispecies, with human girls wearing the same panties as catgirls, even though they had no need for the fly in the back. Apparently it was just that nobody cared enough to alter the situation.

"Better get used to them, I suppose," Karyn said. Jennifer groaned again. "The idea was to stay as non-feminine as possible!" she said. "How'm I gonna do that if I have to wear skirts all the time?"

Karyn sighed. "Hey, I don't like the idea either," she said, "but that's the way it is, and since it's only going to last a year I don't feel like trying to fix it. Besides, you don't have to act really girly, but the point behind this was not to end up in a different form and fight it all the way, the point was to end up in a different form and then explore it. I understand your point about not wanting to lose yourself to girlhood, but you should at least see what it's like."

Jennifer sighed. "I don't want to," she said.
