Karyn didn't stop to look at the dice, she just grabbed three and threw them. It so happened that the dice she'd grabbed were the "gender," "mythical creatures," and "duration" dice, and the result was "opposite, harpy, one year."
Jon suddenly clutched his chest in alarm, only to find that it was expanding into two nicely sized, perfectly rounded breasts; a bra formed under his shirt to support them. Strands of long black hair suddenly fell over his face, and as he reached up to brush them away, he could feel that his face had become softer and finer-featured. "Augh!" he yelled, only to find that his voice had changed from a low tenor to a soft, high alto. His body shape changed, all the straight lines softening into curves, his hips flaring out and his shoulders narrowing, his arms and legs becoming slender and delicate. There was a scrambling sensation in his groin and he could feel something expanding inside his abdomen, and he didn't even need to look to know that he was fully a girl.
Karyn, meanwhile, was undergoing changes in the opposite direction. Her huge breasts vanished into her chest, which was a mixed blessing. Likewise, her long blonde hair became red again, retreating into her scalp until it was about an inch long. Her face became squarer and less delicate, and when she realized what was happening, she gave a startled yelp, only to find that her voice was now a slightly gravely low tenor. Her curves straightened out, her shoulders broadening and her body becoming a little more muscular, her arms and legs changing from slender and delicate to thick and sturdy. And suddenly she could feel her uterus shrinking, until it inverted itself and grew outward. Karyn knew what that meant: she was now a guy.
That was only half the change, though. Their pants and underwear suddenly disappeared (except for Jon's bra,) affording them a view of each others' new genitals, though they covered themselves quickly. Their shirts also changed; Jon'ss became a white blouse with a blue vest over it, holding the things that had been in her pants pockets, while Karyn's just acquired breast pockets to hold those items. Suddenly, the skin on their arms began to expand, growing outward and eventually joining to the sides of their bodies, leaving them with rudimentary wings. They weren't rudimentary for long, though; their pinkie fingers suddenly extended, becoming wingtips, as the part of their wings that wasn't their arms became covered in feathers; Jon's a bluish-gray, Karyn's the same rich red as his hair. Their legs began to change, too; they became thicker and more bowed outwards, shaped like birds' legs, with scrawny, yellow-skinned claws for feet. Tailfeathers ggrew out of their tailbones as their entire lower bodies became feathered, with a soft patch of down covering the crotch area and hiding their genitals. And then it was over; they were complete as gender-swapped harpies.
"Oh no," Jon moaned in her new voice. "Oh, no, no, no..."
"What is it?" Karyn asked, still surprised by his voice change.
"Jon kept moaning. "I...I wished that the duration die would make any changes irreversible until the duration was up, and now I'm stuck as a girl for a year...oh no..."
"Well, that was stupid of you," Karyn scoffed. "Whatever posessed you to do that, if the prospect of being a girl for a year is so appalling?"
"I didn't intend to use the gender die with the duration one!" Jon groaned. "That was you that did that."
Karyn rolled his eyes. "Well, it's not as though you're the only one around here who's been put in an awkward situation by that."
Jon just continued to moan at the prospect of being female for a year. Karyn, meanwhile, pulled out his wallet from his shirt pocket. "Hey, Jon," he said, "look here. I've got my family portrait in here, only it's changed."
Jon came over to look. She'd seen the picture before, and it had changed - the twelve-year-old in the middle was now a boy, and though the father and mother were on the same sides as before, the father looked like a male version of Karyn's mother, and the mother looked like a female version of Karyn's father. Their names were signed under the picture; apparently Karyn was now known as Kevin.
Fearing the worst, Jon pulled her wallet from her vest pocket. Similar changes had taken place; her mother was now her father and vice versa, and she was known as Joy. Her younger sister Zoe had become her younger brother Zach, and her little brother Mikey was now her little sister Michelle.
"Hmm," Kevin said. "I guess the dice changed reality. Say, I wonder..." He rushed over to the window. "Ah, bummer, I was hoping harpies would live in treehouses or something. But I suppose it's hard to build a stable house of any real size in a tree. Well, the kinds of trees we have in North America, anyway."
Joy didn't answer; she was too busy bemoaning her fate. "Oh, quit moping," Kevin scoffed. "If I can spend my entire life as a girl, you can darn well spend a year as one. Now c'mon, let's go out and see what's different!" He grabbed Joy by the wing-hand and dragged her outside.
