His fortunes completely turned around, Graeme set off for work the next morning in a contemplative mood. He'd always hoped to have a son, but right now he was so amazed and thankful he was going to be a father, he didn't mind either way.
As his car passed alongside the park with the well, he suddenly recalled what he had wished for there the previous day. Immediately he pulled his car into a side road and parked it.
My wish came true, he thought. Was it the well? Can this really be a wishing well?
Graeme stood beside the well in contemplation. He waited for a moment when he was sure no one else was around to hear what he was doing, and nervously took a coin out of his pocket.
I should just wish for something small, he thought as he looked down at the coin in his hand, but it's gotta be something noticeable right away. Something that's obvious, but not harmful or dangerous. If it works, I could always change it back later anyway. He flicked the coin into the well and spoke quietly.
"I wish," he paused, looking at his shoes. A moment of inspiration hit and he said, "I wish I was wearing big clown shoes."
Instantly, he felt a tingling around his feet and saw the black leather shoes he wore to the office grow longer. They turned bright red in colour and stopped at what must have been about thirty inches in length and with a bulbous toe end.
Graeme laughed in surprise and tried to walk with his ridiculous shoes, finding the only way he could move without tripping over his feet was in an exaggerated waddle. Then his watch alerted him to the fact that it was 9 o'clock.
"Damn, I'm late!"
He fumbled in his pockets for another coin to fix his wish, but came up empty. Likewise, his wallet only contained bills and cards.
"Crap, I've got no time for this!"
Graeme waddled back to his car to see if he had any change inside, when he noticed something odd about the bay below the steering wheel. It was much deeper than he remembered, and the pedals were really long and thin, just like his shoes..
Oh yeah, he thought. Just like last time, reality has changed to fit the wish, and I only remember something different because I was the one who made the wish! I bet I could go to work with my big ol' clown shoes and everyone would just think it was normal!
A broad smile crossed Graeme's face. He just had to see how his co-workers would react! Without a second thought, he clambered into his car and drove to work.
