A few days later, Jon and Karyn were looking over various college admissions materials. There was a good chance they'd be at separate colleges, but it didn't matter that much, especially with the stone.
"So do you know what you're going to be when you get out of college?" asked Karyn.
"I don't know," said Jon. "Marry a nice guy, have children...."
"What? Jon, you don't go for guys. Do you? I guess I can never really know what someone's like even after being friends with him for a long time..."
"Of course I'm not attracted to guys. But you know, the general idea of marrying a guy and bearing his children pretty much means involving a guy, whether I'm attracted to him or not."
"Uhh, Jon? Most teenage guys don't want to end up married to a guy and bearing children. Did you mess up a wish?"
Jon thought. "No, that's not possible," he said. "I know that that's what I really want. Besides, if it's a wish, you shouldn't be able to notice it because the stone makes you think wishes are normal."
"No, Jon. We went through this before. The wish makes there be a reason for the change. If you wish to be a girl, the reason why you're a girl is that you were born one. It wouldn't make sense for the reason to be that you changed into a girl yesterday. But if a wish just changes your personality, you could have done that yesterday. Then I'd know you changed."
"Well, that speech proves you're college material," said Jon, "but you're not changing my mind. I want to marry a guy and have children."
"But you aren't even attracted to guys!"
"Yeah, that is a problem."
"And men don't give birth."
"Yeah, that's a problem too."
"Well, the problems should convince you that... Wait a minute. You're not going to...."
"What?"
"Use the stone."
"As a matter of fact I wasn't, but now that you gave me the idea..." Jon got the stone from his pocket and said, "I wish...."
