The heat on her thigh made her realize she still had the stone she picked up from Jon's room. She pulled it out of her pocket and placed it next to the certificate, figuring Jon would see it when he came down.
Turning back to dinner, she was left with thoughts of Jon and prom. She wanted to do more for him, and maybe convincing him that getting help wasn't always a bad thing, though, she certainly had trouble with it sometimes.
Jon was up in his room, searching for the stone. He knew he had hidden it on his bed, not the best place, but he was in a rush. At least this time Mom left the pron this time. She usually threw it out, so she must have been in a good mood today.
He had to give up his search when his Mom called for dinner. He tried to recall where he left it as he headed down the stairs and toward the kitchen. He was so lost in his thoughts that he almost missed the stone sitting there next to that flyer. He quickly pocketed it before Zoe or Mikey could see it. Glancing at his mother, he hopes she didn't make any wishes, but she had to have seen the flyer.
"What's for dinner?" Jon asked, trying to appear calm.
"Chicken Caesar salad," she said, placing a bowl of lettuce on the table. Mikey came thundering down the stairs and of course, the first thing out of his mouth was a complaint about it. Zoe slid into her seat and started to serve herself as their mother came back.
"How was everyone's day?" And so their typical dinner continued. Zoe was quiet, Mikey annoying as hell, and Jon did his best not to think too much about the stone or the problems it could cause. Well, the last part wasn't typical, but glancing at the flyer for that dress store, he really wanted to know what his mother thought.
Once dinner was over, Jon headed up to his room, grabbing the flyer so his siblings didn't see it and ask stupid questions. Zoe stuck around to clean up and Mikey started his homework under direct orders from Mom. With the door closed behind, he removed the stone from his pocket.
The stone in one hand, the flyer in the other, he stared at them, trying to figure a way out of this. He wanted to go to prom, and maybe this was the only way. He could even ask Karen to go with him. Even if it was just as friends, it still wouldn't be too bad. Plus, he could actually afford some clothes now with this. And of course they had to have guy clothes, I mean, the dresses were all up front and on display, so really, his makeover would be just a fitting.
"I wish Mom would be okay with whatever happens," he said. The stone flashed in his hand and he felt a little better about everything. "I wish that no one would make fun of whatever I wear or buy." He wanted to go, and the peer pressure would just be too much if people made fun of him. This way, he could enjoy himself and not worry about what other people thought.
He thought of calling Karen, but he would see her tomorrow. Maybe then he'd get the chance to ask her to prom. Assuming no one else asked her first.
