"I wish Jon would tell the truth," Jon's mother said with the rock in one hand and a dirty magazine in the other, "He told me he'd gotten rid of these things. Well, I'll have a word with him when he gets home."
Later that day:
Jon walked in the door, and found his mother looking crossly at him. "Young man, what did I tell you about those magazines in your room?"
"Mom!" Jon was taken aback by his mother's frankness.
"Well, I thought you said you'd gotten rid of them."
"And I did. I threw them away," Jon lied.
"Of course you did. You said you did, so you must have." She now couldn't quite remember why she'd been so angry with Jon. And the more Jon thought about it, the more convinced he was that he had gotten rid of those magazines. Brushing it off, he continued the day as normal.
