With the start of lunch, J.J. and Karyn headed toward the Girl's Room. Just as they reached the door, the fire alarm went off.
Knowing that they didn't have time to enter the girl's room and check out J.J.'s condition, the two turned and exited the building.
Making sure that she didn't have the wishing rock, Karyn said, "I wish that Mr. Bishop wasn't so anal about fire drills."
"It is like his signature now that he is principal, isn't it." J.J. agreed. "He holds at least one a week."
The two exited the old wooden building, not caring that it was a fire trap and the principal was doing his best to try to keep the students and teachers safe.
Minutes later the fire trucks pulled up out front of the school and immediately began pulling fire hoses toward the cafeteria.
"Maybe it isn't a fire drill." J.J. said.
Rumors began to fly around the school. Some, like the entire school was burning down, were obviously not (yet) true. After about a half hour, Mr. Bishop, armed with a loudspeaker, announced. "We had a fire in the cafeteria. It is under control but the kitchen has sustained damage. It will be a day or two before we know the full scope of the damage and can make arrangements to serve lunch on campus. The fire department will allow us to escort students back into the building in small groups to get your belongings. Please line up here."
J.J. and Karyn found themselves near the end of the long line of students. Teachers and other facility did a good job moving small groups of students into the building to get their belongings. It still was over an hour before it was J.J.'s and Karyn's turn.
The two collected their belongs and headed home.
"I really need to find a girl's room." Karyn said as they left the school's grounds.
J.J. felt the need as well. The nearest fast food places were packed with students.
