Meanwhile, back at Jon's home....
"I don't understand," said Jon's mother. "I hoped Jon would grow out of it but he hasn't. It's very disturbing."
Jon's father said "I agree with you completely, dear. Jon first met this girl when he was 17 and she was 11. It isn't right for the only friend in the whole world he has to be a girl that young. It isn't right for Jon to be with a prepubescent girl and nobody else--it's like he could be a child molester!"
"I hope not," said Jon's mother. "Besides he said that he and Lucy never did anything sexual with each other."
She dumped out a box on the kitchen table. "Jon's precious things, I know, but he has a lot of letters from her."
"What happened to that girl Karyn?" said Jon's father. "She was the same age as Jon and they'd known each other for a while, but all of a sudden Jon loses all of his friends--so he and Karyn aren't talking to each other any more. The only girl in his life is this 11 year old, now 12 year old.
Jon's mother said "I looked through these letters before. Here, you look at them too. There's nothing really bad, I don't think Jon's a child molester, but it's still wrong. Watch out for the other stuff, though. Jon put a lot of precious things in this box other than the letters, though I don't know why he wants to keep this old rock." She picked up a stone which was lying on top of the letters and said "I wish I knew what was going on here...."
And suddenly, she knew. "Ron! I found it!"
"What, dear?"
"I wish you knew too."
It was a magic stone! And the cause of Jon's problem was simple.
One day, Jon and Karyn did have an argument. And he did tell his troubles to an 11 year old girl, Lucy, but they weren't really friends--she was just someone who happened to be there. "My friend Karyn seems to like being popular and forgetting me," he said.
The girl, who had gotten a crush on Jon, had taken Jon's hand, touching the stone he was holding. And she happened to say "I wish I was your only best friend, forever..." And since then, Karyn and everyone else weren't his friends.
"It's all some horrible spell!" said Jon's father.
"We have to fix it!" said his mother.
"But what do we do? Wishes can't be reversed."
"But they can be changed. There are lots of ways. Let's think this over."
Eventually they decided on what to do and Jon's mother put back everything except the stone and said "I wish...."
