Jon slid into his seat and looked over to see Jay Duncan sitting next to him, looking upset about something. "Something wrong, Jay?"
"I just flunked a pop quiz," he said.
Jay was not only one of the smartest kids he knew, but he always seemed to find school effortless. "What happened?"
"I just couldn't understand the questions..." Jay said. "With these new classes, it's like I don't know what I'm doing anymore, and If I flunk again, no one is going to want me when I graduate." College seemed a long way off to Jon, but he thought Jay would probably end up at MIT or some other really high-achieving school.
"Can't you ask the teacher for help?"
"I did. She set me up with the best student in the class. And it isn't me..." Jay complained. "It's only the first day of the new curriculum and I'm already behind."
He'd been in school with Jay since they started middle school together. Other than gym, he'd never gotten anything less than a B+, and he'd been upset about that for days. "First day?" But it was Tuesday...the first day of classes after the break was yesterday.
"I was confused when they announced it yesterday too...but...maybe I'm just too stupid to get it," Jay said, frustrated.
"Jay, I think you're overreacting..." Jon said.
"There's my new tutor now," he said, gesturing at the person coming into class.
Jon turned and was surprised to see...
