As she locked the doors, Shane turned to Judy, who was closing out the old-fashioned cash register they used to give the salon a retro feel. She really is a lovely young woman, Shane thought to herself, then had to shake her head. That is Jon, he's still a boy, she forcibly told herself, though she had trouble really believing it. Judy -- Jon -- was really doing that great a job of convincing everyone that she -- he -- was a girl.
"Jon," Shane called. No reaction. Duh. Her name is Judy. "Judy," Shane tried again. Judy's head perked up as she came to attention. "Yes, Miss Shane," she replied.
"I saw you speaking to Mrs. Callaway's son earlier," Shane said, trying not to smile at the way Judy blushed. She remembered when she was a girl that age. "Did he ask you out?"
"Yes, he did," Judy replied with a beaming smile. She suddenly looked worried. "Is that ok? Is there a rule against--"
"No, no!" Shane interjected, laughing. "Not at all. It's just that, you know, with your ... situation, I thought that might be awkward."
Judy frowned prettily. "Situation?"
Shane wasn't entirely sure what she'd meant either. She shook her head to clear the cobwebs. This is Jon, she reminded herself. The boy was simply incredible at following her orders. She needed some way to keep things straight, but she was having a hard time doing so. A light bulb went off, dimly, in her head.
"Never mind, dear. I have an idea, though. From now on, whenever you come to work, or when you're going out with a boy, I want you to be Judy and do as good a job convincing everyone that you're Judy as you're doing now. When you're not at work any more, you can be Jon again." Judy got a puzzled look on her face, but Shane wanted to get this over with to get her head back in order. "And I want you to have a good time with that nice boy who asked you out -- you can leave early to get ready for your date." With that, she turned and went into the back room.
None of that made any sense to Judy, who didn't notice the odd sensations in her chest, gut, or crotch. She turned back to the register, humming a little tune, and daydreamed about the good time she'd have with Mike.
