She saw Jon there with Karyn, but he was facing away. She could tell that Jon had breasts, but her view was partly blocked by the rubber tree plant she had bought last summer.
Which was a problem. Because it occurred to Joan--a little too late--that that wish might not be smart. First she had wished for Jon to have large breasts, and then she had wished for her son Jon to not have large breasts.
The only way that both of those wishes could come true at the same time would be for her not to have a son Jon.
So either Jon was a girl (and 'my son Jon' didn't exist), Jon was someone else's son (and 'my son Jon' didn't exist), or Jon had a different name (and both 'Jon' and 'my son Jon' didn't exist). And it was impossible to tell at the moment.
The different name would be the best result. But she suspected the stone wasn't that cooperative.
Flustered by the bizarre events, Joan just yelled at him, instead of walking past the plant. "Jon! Are you Jon? Are you a guy? Are you my son?" Which might have made him think she was crazy.
But at any rate, Jon's answer was....
