"It's really because I want you..." Sarah paused and her face began to redden. Then she quickly finished with "to be my friend," which didn't at all seem to fit.
Jon had heard the rumors, of course, that Sarah was really a lesbian. That was why she would tease all her male followers but never really get serious with any of them.
Jon took a guess. She decided to test that theory, and deliberately misunderstood Sarah, all the while suspecting that the 'misunderstanding' was what Sarah really wanted to say. "You mean, like a girlfriend? Going out with you?"
"I, uh..." said Sarah.
"I see," said Jon. "You know they say that maybe 1 out of 10 people are gay. You don't even have twenty people on the cheerleading team, so there's probably only one lesbian there. Maybe two if you're very lucky. And you don't get along with most of the girls who aren't on the team. So I'm one of the few people you can ask out at all."
"That's ridiculous!" said Sarah. "You and I haven't gotten along either! If I'm a lesbian and I haven't asked girls out because I don't get along with them, then I wouldn't ask you either!"
"That's right," said Jon. "You wouldn't ask me. And you didn't ask me! You sounded like you were either going to ask me out or just say 'I want you,' but you didn't."
"I..." replied Sarah.
"You know it's funny. Because I was a guy, everyone can figure out I'm a lesbian anyway. So if I'm the one who asks you, it doesn't embarrass me at all. Sarah, would you like to go out with me?"
