At the moment Jon made his wish, on the other side of town, an abandoned building suddenly filled up with activity.
"Countdown to activation," an automated voice said. "In 5...4...3...2...1..." An antenna on the roof of the building, not previously there, began to blanket the town with a signal.
They weren't 100% sure how it would work outside of the lab...but that was what field trials were for.
The effects of the transmitted wave would make life very simple...for the majority of the population, at least. There was a small percentage for which it would have an unexpected, or roughly opposite effect. But the amount was negligible, in their opinion.
Back in Jon's house, he suddenly began to wonder what he was worrying about. He put the stone away and left his room. He wandered into his sister's room. "Hey, I'm bored," he said. "You want to go do...something?"
Zoe was about to object, but she suddenly couldn't think of a reason why not to... "Sure," she said, wandering out with him.
