Linda Madison was annoyed. She loved her sons with all her heart, but that one of them hadn't woken the other up, and the other had missed the bus, which would probably make her late for work was frustrating. "Now I'll have to drive you," she said.

She could hear the voice of her son, chasing after her. He tugged on her blouse, trying to get her to stop. She slowed.
