"I wonder who you're really supposed to be," Scarlett said, pondering it.
Sarah didn't like the idea that she was supposed to be someone else. She liked her life as a Goth and she never wanted to be anything else.
"You know, I might have something that ... well, I never really had a use for it until now ... but, yeah, it might work ..." Scarlett said, walking towards the back of the store and then disappearing into the back room.
"I still can't believe that you're not our friend," Stephanie said.
"But I am your friend," Sarah said.
"Here it is," Scarlett announced, coming back towards them. In her hand was a small mirror. "Look into the mirror and you'll see your true self," she said to Sarah.
Sarah hesitantly took hold of the mirror. Part of her was curious, but another part didn't want anything to do with it. She didn't want to know anything about what might have been. She was perfectly happy the way she was.
She clutched the mirror without looking, then closed her eyes and took a deep breath. And then she opened them and looked down.
"What a freak!" she heard her reflection say. It was her voice, but the words were filled with contempt.
The girl she saw in the mirror looked like any one of the bratty bitchy cheerleader girls that went to her school. The girls who cared more about their popularity status and how good they looked than anything else. Sarah hated those girls.
"I ... can't believe I'm supposed to be like that," Sarah said.
"You say that like it's a bad thing," her reflection said. "I'd rather be a preppy drama queen than be a freak like you."
"I'm not a freak, you bitch," Sarah said. Then she paused for a moment. "I can't believe I'm arguing with ... myself."
Scarlett grabbed the mirror from her. "That's enough. Exposure to the mirror for too long can have side effects."
"I was part of the popular crowd," Sarah said, still shocked by it. "I was a fucking cheerleader."
Athena and Stephanie looked uneasily towards each other. How would this affect their friendship? While it was true that Sarah wasn't like that now, they would always know that she wasn't supposed to be their friend or even a Goth.
