It was another day at Mcdonalds for Jamie. Life had not been kind to the eighteen year old. She'd had to drop out of school over a year ago and work here full time to support her grandmother. She'd come home on workdays reeking of french fries and grease and be too tired to do much else than take a shower and go to bed.
She was a bright girl and missed her youth terribly. She remembered when working part-time at McDonalds had seemed a chore that she did to get some extra money for her family, before her mother was hit by the drunk driver. She'd had time for friends and school then.
Suddenly, she felt a chill, and a compulsion to leave this place...forever. A wave of happiness and relief passed over her, her worries fading as someone pushed past her to take over her station...a girl her age she'd never seen before. She knew this girl would take care of her responsibilities.
She walked out the door, driven to a new life.
