Zoe Meshida finished her breakfast. She was kind of an outsider. But that was mainly because she was basically a foreigner ... and no one wanted to be friends with someone who had a hard time speaking English and who didn't quite fit in with American society. She wished she knew how her little brother did it.
Or did he? He never brought his friends home. Maybe he was lying to Father. The thought made her nervous. If he found out about such a thing. The part of her that wanted to be angry flared up again. Then she glanced at her mother, dressed as plainly as she was. Her mother was a shy sweet woman who never challenged her husband.
She decided that today would be the day she would change things. She would go to school and she would make at least one friend...She felt a well of strength bubble up within her, unsure of where it was coming from.
She nearly forgot to ask her father's permission to leave the table. He granted it, and she hurried to her room to get her things.
