(Author's note: sorry, the first bit here should have been at the end of the last chapter... it's a copy and paste error, my bad.)
*A photo of her recently deceased grandfather hanging on the kitchen wall caught her eye, and she turned to her sister, Zoe, just long enough to say, "hey, I think I had a dream last night that Grandpa left us a magic--" but just then her eyes glazed over, and she stood up from the table. Larry Madison quickly took her place.
And with that, the memory of Mikey's wish was lost to the ether.*
Janine didn't leave her house. Instead, she walked up the stairs and into a room that felt incredibly familiar. The clothes didn't seem to fit right, but they fit. And as she looked around, it felt like her bedroom. She looked over at her clock and realized with a shock that she was late. She quickly trampled down the stairs and poured a bowl of cereal for herself next to her sister, Zoe, and her brother, Larry. She knew it wasn't healthy to eat quickly, but she did so anyway, and finished at the same time as her siblings, so they could all catch the bus to high school together.
If she put any thought into it, Janine may have realized it was kind of weird that her twin brother was over a foot shorter than her, but she didn't really put much thought into it. Zoe's friend, Athena, was already on the bus, as was Janine's friend, Karyn. Larry scanned the heads, and almost missed his best friend, Mikey, whose head didn't reach higher than the seat backs.
