The party was packed, mostly with new college students, including Sarah and several others that Jon and Karyn knew from high school.
The machine was on a table near a wall, mostly ignored, and a wire from it led to the carpet.
"I have an announcement to make!" said a guy in the fraternity. "I'm George, and me and my fraternity brothers helped set up this party for all you new students! I noticed that there seem to be more guys than girls here!"
Jon and Karyn looked around. There seemed to be about the same number of each.
"But," continued George, because of a generous contribution from our university scientists, that might change! It might get worse or better, depending on who's standing where. Because one of you lucky people is standing on a square of plastic hidden under the carpet. It's not magic, but it may as well be! I can't explain it, you have to see it to believe it!
He walked over to the sex-change machine, turned it on, and pressed a button. Which would transform whoever was standing on the square of plastic hidden by the carpet....
