As the bell rang and Jon headed out into the hall, he stopped for a moment by one of his classmates, Ellen Jackson. She and Jon had been in the same school for years, but weren't friends...more like acquaintances. "Did you notice anything strange about class today?" He asked.
She responded with a bark that sounded very realistic. Clearing her throat, she replied, "Like what?"
"Umm...I don't know."
"It's just the new teacher, I guess. Otherwise, it was the same as always is in Language class. I think I'm becoming fluent though."
"Umm...sure, me too," Jon said, more confused than ever. "What happened to our old teacher?"
"A few teachers got reassigned. The others have to learn and teach the new curriculum. We have to get to homeroom...we don't want to be late." They shared the same homeroom, and he still had a few questions for her. "You seemed to be having trouble in class," Ellen offered. "If you want some help later," she offered.
"Umm...thanks. I'll think about it." They slid into their seats in homeroom.
Good morning. These are today's announcements. New IDs are being issued to all students today. The new IDs are smaller, and can be worn around your neck. They have a digital chip in them with your information on it, that can be read by security and also contain health information. Students who do not wear their IDs during school hours will be sent to detention.
A student began to hand out people's IDs. Jon looked at his. It was a small tag on a band. The tag had his name, student ID number, and home address on it. He found that equally strange, but people were putting them on without a second look.
There will be a pet adoption fair after school. All interested students are invited to attend in the gym.
He really needed to find Karyn. When the bell rang again, he headed away from his next class, to try to catch her before she got to hers.
