Sarah was having a lovely morning, being nice to everyone, to the surprise of most of them. She was in such a good mood, it almost came naturally to her. The thought occurred to her that she might even try to make friends with Karyn and the new Jon, how better to keep tabs on them. Theoretically. But what would she even do? Was she just still feeling guilty? Realistically those two probably wouldn’t want to have anything to do with her anyway, so maybe keeping her distance was the best. What she was not prepared for was seeing Jon in her current state.
“J..ane, how’s it going?” she said in the hallway, almost spilling the beans. Obviously Jon had been very adventurous with the magic rock, but Sarah had to pretend this sight was nothing out of the ordinary like everyone else, and she definitely shouldn’t slip up and accidentally call her Jon.
“Sarah?” Jane said almost in disbelief. Jon never had the righteous hatred of Sarah McMillan that Karyn exhibited, and her, or his at the time, experience with her was limited to her trying to flirt with him and manipulate him into becoming her simp, but Jane couldn’t for the life of her imagine what their relationship was in this alternate timeline. Of course she didn’t know that Sarah was a stranger to this timeline as well, while Sarah knew both that Jon and Karyn were strangers to it but didn’t know Sarah was. And so, they might be able to believe anything, even that they were friends already.
“You’re looking happy, Jane, you foxy lady, I’ll bet you made progress with Karyn, nudge nudge wink wink,” Sarah said cheerfully, but the last part quietly.
“Umm,” Jon said.
“Don’t spare the details girlfriend. I’m mostly curious how you two kiss. I wonder what it’s like, being like that, it must be a lot of fun.”
“Yeah, I guess, it is…”
“You two didn’t have lunch with me yesterday, I missed you.”
Are the three of us actually friends? Jane wondered, is that actually possible? At first she thought Sarah was just messing with her, but it seemed like she might be being genuine. It occurred to Jane, that maybe she should really make a concerted effort to see this alternate world where Jon had been Jane the two-headed fox girl all her life, with no assumptions, and just give everyone a fresh start, and suggest Karyn do the same.
“My guy Freddy made a lot of food for me today, you and Karyn and him, we should enjoy it together, just like the three of us used to in elementary school? Remember, best friends?”
Ok now Jane knew history must have been changed much more drastically than she thought. She needed to contact Karyn and let her know before she messed it up with hostility toward Sarah. A world where she and Karyn were best friends with Sarah! That was almost as amazing as waking up a two-headed fox girl.
“Sure, I’ll talk to her,” Jane promised.
Later, at lunch:
“Karyn, you have to try this apple pie, it’s so good!” Jane said with her left head, completely unencumbered by the fact that she was chewing and swallowing food with her right head.
Both Karyn and Sarah looked at Jane with amazement, and a bit of jealousy, and then looked at each other, thinking the same thing, wondering what it must be like, to be like that.
“Here, have some,” Sarah offered.
Karyn was at first repulsed, because Sarah was offering a bite of the piece of pie she had been eating, with the fork Sarah had been eating with.
“Aww, are you afraid of getting my germs, after the number of times we kissed in middle school?” Sarah said to Karyn. This was a lie of course, but Sarah knew Karyn didn’t know that.
Karyn’s eyes went wide at this shocking revelation. But if it was true, then she didn’t want to let her opinions about Sarah from the original way things were poison her relationship with this evidently nice version of Sarah. Honestly Sarah was so attractive, Karyn really didn’t dislike the idea at all of getting rid of the bad blood between them. Of course as long as it didn’t cross a line and involve cheating on Jon.
“This is good pie,” Karyn said.
“Aiee?!” Jane cried out, while Karyn and Sarah were both treated to a horrifying sight, but one which was to the surprise of no one else in the room. Because Jane had just changed right there. She was still a two-headed fox girl, but the consistency of her flesh had changed to that of apple pie crust mottled together with apple pie filling.
Jane appeared to now be like a living statue made out of apple pie material, made into the life-sized shape of a two-headed fox girl.
Jane did, after all, have the condition of changing to match the tastes of Karyn, and right now, Karyn had been enjoying some very tasty apple pie.
“It may not be my place to say, but isn’t it inappropriate for you to be eating apple pie, Jane?” Freddy said. “After all, it’s cannibalism for you, isn’t it?”
