"I can't believe we're eating chicken again, Mom. Can you pass the greens?" said Zoe, rolling her eyes.
"I never heard of a chile' not eatin' chicken. Just try some, honey."
Carl had completely forgotten Zoe, Riki realized as she sat at the table. Other than her dark skin, she looked exactly the same, from leather bracelets to lip-piercings.
"Mother, I'm not going to support factory farming by eating this stuff, no matter how many nights a week you bring it home. And you can forget about me eating any of that frankenfood watermelon, either."
"You been watching too many of them scary movies, girl. Ain't no kinda Frankenstein watermelon up in here."
Sighing and rolling her eyes, Zoe took the watermelon and passed it on to Riki.
"Mama, I'm going over to Karyn's house to study tonight," said Riki.
"A'ight, but you get ya self home by ten."
"Yes ma'am."
After dinner, Riki headed upstairs for the phone.
