When she awoke for the second time, it was ten minutes before her alarm was supposed to go off, and she felt thoroughly rested. If the stone had the ability to rid her of the bane of the alarm clock, it might be extremely difficult to give it back to Jon later.
Once again, she dressed in a loose, comfortable skirt and long-sleeved blouse, her lack of pockets requiring that she once again tuck the rock into her bra. She smiled as she felt it's cool surface warm to her skin.
Her only problem came when she was going to put on her shoes. The boots she normally wore were too tight, and bunched the hair around her feet. She tried wearing some sandals, but as she was walking out of her room one of the buckles yanked on a tuft of hair, causing her to yelp in pain. Taking them off and flinging them into the closet, her hand flew to where she kept the rock.
"I wish I could just go to school barefoot!" she yelled.
"But you can, dear." She heard her mother say from behind her, "Don't you remember the special rule they made for you?"
Karyn whirled around, startled.
"You know your old shoes would never fit you," she said, "Now, are you ready for school?"
